MammoSite

Cancer Center of North Dakota is among a few, select places in North Dakota that offer this breakthrough, out-patient treatment.  MammoSite is targeted, highly effective, less invasive on your physical being and in your life.

MammoSite® is a less invasive, site specific radiation treatment (or brachytherapy) that delivers radiation directly to the area where a breast tumor has been surgically removed by a lumpectomy. Tumors are most likely to recur in the original site, and MammoSite reduces those odds.

Normally standard brachytherapy involves surgically implanting many catheters into the breast and administering radiation for up to seven weeks. MammoSite has one balloon catheter that is inserted into the area where the tumor was removed. The catheter is expanded and radiation is delivered through a tiny bead attached to a wire, irradiating the area. Radiation treatment involves two, ten-minute treatments a day for four to five days. Since MammoSite treats a very specific area, the patient has fewer side effects that happen when healthy tissue is affected.
